A clear price before work starts
When a storm knocks out power, a generator keeps the heat, AC, fridge and well pump running. EZ HVAC & Electric provides generator installation in Charlotte, NC and nearby towns, from a whole house generator that starts on its own to a simple hookup for a portable unit.
Choose your backup
Generator options
- Whole house standby generators. A permanently installed home generator that starts automatically when the power goes out. We handle Generac and Kohler installation.
- Backup generators for essential circuits. A smaller standby setup that powers the circuits you choose.
- Portable generator hookups. A generator inlet box plus a transfer switch or interlock kit, so you can safely power circuits from a portable generator without extension cords.

Installation day
Standby generator installation: what to expect
Size and locate
We help you choose the generator size and a location that meets the manufacturer's clearance requirements.
Set the equipment
The generator is set on its pad and the transfer switch is installed near your panel.
Connect the system
Electrical wiring is run between the generator, transfer switch and panel, and the fuel supply is connected.
Test and walk through
We start the generator, test a transfer, and walk you through how it works.
Portable generator safety
Portable generator safety
Keep exhaust outside
Never run a generator indoors, in a garage or near open windows. Carbon monoxide from the exhaust can be deadly.
Never backfeed an outlet
Never plug a generator into a wall outlet or dryer outlet to power the house. It can backfeed the utility lines and injure line workers.
Use proper transfer equipment
Use a properly installed inlet with a transfer switch or interlock kit, which is exactly what those are designed for.
Choose your fuel supply
Natural gas or propane?
Most standby generators run on either natural gas or propane. If your home already has natural gas service, it's usually the simplest choice: the supply is continuous and there's no tank to refill. Homes without natural gas use propane, which means sizing the tank so it can run the generator long enough to get through an extended outage.
Either way, the fuel line must be sized for the generator's demand. We'll go over the fuel supply as part of your estimate so there are no surprises on installation day.

FAQ
Good questions. Straight answers.
Generator Installation in Charlotte, NC.
What size generator do I need?
It depends on what you want to power. Running the whole house, including central AC, takes a larger generator than covering essentials like the fridge, furnace blower, lights and outlets. We'll size it from your actual loads.
Standby generator vs portable hookup?
A standby generator is permanently installed and starts on its own within seconds of an outage. A portable hookup is a lower-cost option: you roll the generator out, plug it into an inlet and switch over manually.
What is a transfer switch or interlock kit?
Both keep generator power from feeding back into the utility lines, which protects line workers and your equipment. A transfer switch moves selected circuits to the generator; an interlock kit mechanically prevents the main breaker and generator breaker from being on at the same time.
How much does a whole house generator cost in Charlotte?
It depends on the generator size, the transfer switch, the fuel connection and how far it is from the panel. We'll quote the full installation after looking at your home.
