Safety first

When is it an emergency?

Call right away if you have sparking, smoke or a burning smell from outlets, switches or the panel; a breaker that trips immediately every time it's reset; exposed or water-damaged wiring; or a loss of power that isn't a utility outage.

If you see fire or smoke, call 911 first. For downed power lines or a neighborhood-wide outage, stay clear and call Duke Energy.

Before you call

Safe things to check first

  • GFCI outlets

one GFCI can protect several outlets downstream, so a dead bathroom, garage or outdoor outlet may just need a GFCI somewhere else reset. Press the Reset button firmly.

  • Breakers

a tripped breaker sits in the middle position. Push it fully off, then back on.

  • Overloaded circuits

Overloaded circuit: unplug space heaters, hair dryers and other heavy loads before resetting.

If a breaker trips again immediately, a GFCI won't reset, or you notice heat, buzzing or a burning smell, stop there. Don't keep resetting it, and don't open the panel cover. Call a licensed electrician.

Our process

How we troubleshoot

  • Listen to the symptoms

Talk through what you've noticed: when it happens, which rooms, and what was running.

  • Test the circuit

Identify the circuit and test it under load at the panel and at the devices.

  • Find the cause

Trace the problem to the failed breaker, device, splice or wiring run.

  • Explain and price

Explain the cause and give you the repair price before any work starts.

Intermittent problems, like lights that flicker only sometimes, can take longer to find. We'll keep you updated as we go.

Upfront clarity

What affects the cost of electrical repair

  • How long it takes to find the problem, especially for intermittent faults
  • The part involved: a device or single breaker versus a wiring repair
  • Access: attics, crawl spaces and finished walls take more time
  • Whether the root cause is the panel or old wiring that needs a bigger fix

You'll always get the price before the repair starts.

FAQ

Good questions. Straight answers.

Electrical Repair & Troubleshooting in Charlotte, NC.

Why does my breaker keep tripping?

A breaker trips when a circuit is overloaded, has a short or has a ground fault. It can also mean the breaker itself is failing. If it trips again right after resetting, stop resetting it and call us.

Why are my lights flickering?

One flickering fixture is often a bulb or loose connection. Flickering across several rooms, or lights that dim when appliances start, can point to a loose connection at the panel or a service problem and should be checked.

When is an electrical problem an emergency?

Sparking, smoke, burning smells, a breaker that trips immediately every time, exposed or wet wiring, or losing power to part of the home when it isn't a utility outage. For fire or smoke, call 911 first. Limited after-hours emergency service by phone.

Can you replace a single breaker?

Yes. If one breaker has failed and the panel is otherwise in good shape, we can replace just that breaker.

What does electrical troubleshooting cost?

It depends on how long it takes to find the problem and what the repair involves. We'll explain what we find and give you the repair price before any work starts.
